Materials & Jewelry FAQ
Everything you need to know about the materials, gemstones, and craftsmanship behind every Balsamroot Jewelry piece.
14K Gold Filled vs. Gold Plated — What's the Difference?
14K gold filled and gold plated are not the same. Gold filled means a thick, solid layer of 14K gold is mechanically bonded to a brass or copper core under heat and pressure. By US federal standards, gold filled must contain at least 1/20th (5%) gold by weight — making it 50–100× thicker than standard gold plating.
Gold plated pieces have only a very thin electrodeposited layer that can wear through relatively quickly, especially with daily wear or exposure to water and sweat. Gold filled pieces are significantly more durable and long-lasting with proper care.
Balsamroot pieces - 14K gold filled earrings and necklaces use genuine 14K gold filled findings, chain, and wire.
Is Sterling Silver Safe for Sensitive Skin?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper for durability. Most people — including those with metal sensitivities — do well with sterling silver. However, individual responses to metals vary, and we cannot guarantee suitability for every skin type.
A few tips for sensitive skin:
- Keep sterling silver dry; remove pieces before swimming, bathing, or exercising.
- Store in an airtight pouch or zip bag to slow tarnishing.
- Polish gently with a soft jewelry cloth to maintain finish.
If you have a known allergy to copper or silver, please consult a dermatologist before wearing. We are unable to make medical claims about skin reactions.
Do You Use Brass or Copper in Your Pieces?
Yes. Some designs incorporate brass or copper findings, accents, or wire. These metals add warmth and are well-suited to nature-inspired aesthetics. Like sterling silver, brass and copper may develop a patina over time — a natural characteristic of these metals that can be maintained or embraced depending on your preference.
If you have questions about a specific piece, feel free to reach out before purchasing.
Note: Brass and copper contain alloys that may not suit all skin types. If you have known metal sensitivities, we recommend selecting sterling silver or 14K gold filled options where available.
Natural Gemstone Variation — What Should I Expect?
Every natural gemstone is one of a kind. Color, pattern, inclusions, surface texture, and tone will vary from stone to stone — even within the same gemstone type. This is a feature of genuine natural materials, not a defect.
Product photos represent a typical stone but your piece may differ slightly. We handpick each stone for quality and character, and we find that variation is part of what makes handmade jewelry meaningful.
Are Gemstones Treated or Enhanced?
Some gemstones commonly used in jewelry — including turquoise, labradorite, moonstone, and others — may undergo industry-standard treatments such as stabilization, heat treatment, or surface enhancement to improve durability, color consistency, or appearance. These treatments are standard practice in the gemstone industry.
What Are the Dimensions of Your Pieces?
Dimensions — including pendant size, chain length, earring drop, and overall measurements — are listed in each product description. Measurements are taken at the longest or widest point.
